“PILGRIM AND NEW APOSTLE. ST. FRANCIS ON THE CAMINO DE SANTIAGO”

Promoted by the Xunta de Galicia, with the collaboration of the Municipality of Assisi, the Ordo Fratrum Minorum, the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Perugia and the Centro Italiano di Studi Compostellani di Perugia, on August 22nd, the exhibition Pellegrino and new Apostle will be inaugurated in Assisi at Buonacquisti Palace, Piazza del Comune. St. Francis on the Camino de Santiago.

The extraordinary exhibition commemorates the tradition of pilgrimage of St. Francis in Santiago de Compostela (1214) through the exhibition of precious artifacts mainly from Santiago and Galicia. In particular, the cultural and religious background of Compostella of the thirteenth century is reconstructed, with a choice of objects that will bring out the character of the extraordinary place of encounter between cultures and civilizations. Findings from the Hispanic-Moorish and Islamic culture are mixed with precious relics from the Holy Land and objects of the Christian liturgy of the period, setting up the cosmopolitan era of Compostella.

Much space is dedicated to the iconography of St. Francis in Spanish art with works by intense drama thanks to the authors such as Francisco Zurbarán and Domenikos Theotokopoulos, known as “El Greco”, or sculptors such as José Ferreiro.

Medieval lapidary artifacts from the same cathedral of Santiago and the extraordinary granite tympanum of the first half of the fourteenth century from the church of San Francisco de Pontevedra enrich and give meaning to the exhibition.

In background the Camino de Santiago, marked by several Franciscan monasteries, whose foundation has been attributed to Saint Francis himself.

The event, that takes place as part of the anniversary (1214-2014) of the journey of St. Francis in Santiago de Compostella, inaugurates a series of initiatives that the Xunta de Galicia dedicates to the anniversary, including study meetings, conferences, cultural initiatives as the photographic exhibition, entrusted to the Centro Italiano di Studi Compostellani di Perugia “In the sign of the Tau and the Seashell. From Assisi to Santiago in the footsteps of St. Francis, “which traces the Franciscan journey. Along this route on August 2nd, from Santa Maria degli Angeli started a pilgrimage on foot to unite symbolically Assisi and Compostella.

The exhibition will be inaugurated tomorrow, August 22nd, at 6pm, the President of the Xunta de Galicia Alberto Núñez Feijóo, from ‘Archbishop Fra’ José Rodríguez Carballo, OFM, General Secretary of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Claudio Ricci, Mayor of Assisi..
